Excavations

The site was first excavated in the second half of the 19th century by Englishman Frank Calvert, then by Heinrich Schliemann, a German. Around 1822 a site in Turkey called Hisarlik was identified as the possible site for Homer’s Troy.

Since Hisarlik was first labled as Homer’s Troy it has been under almost constant excavation (as there were many cities called Troy in the same spot). Evidence of several settlements have been found at the site.
