While the multiple different civilizations hid underground, they would continue their daily lives. They would trade in between themselves, hoping to keep their daily lives as normal as possible while living underground. Different tunnels were also dug connecting other underground cities to Derinkuyu, allowing other refugees to trade with those in Derinkuyu. Above ground, the city of Derinkuyu was part of the Silk Road, meaning it had a lot influence from Europe and Asia.
While the Christians were hiding in the city, they changed repurposed several of the rooms into chapels. Showing archaeologists that Christians settled here as refugees but also they continued to practice while underground.
