Family doesn’t have to be blood related, and in most cases at an orphanage that is what happens. Orphanages are a place for children to go who have lost their parents, either to death or to the fact that their parents have given them up. This scenario can occur and often does because parents cannot afford to keep the child, but could not afford an abortion either. Although these situations are sad, there are many times that children go to orphanages and feel that the people there are their family. On the other hand, however, orphanages have a negative connotation and tend to make it seem as if the children and the place are ugly and unhappy. In Annie’s story, the orphanage was not a good place to be. Annie and her friends did not care for their foster mother, Miss Hannigan. They did not feel as if this was their home or their family.
