Mental Illness in Far Cry 3 & the Affects on Jason’s “Family”
FarCry3 takes place on the Rook Islands. Jason along with his older brother Grant and his younger brother Riley, as well as a group of their friends, take a vacation to the Rook Islands to celebrate Riley getting his pilot license. However, they land on a pirate-infested island and are kidnapped by a pirate lord named Vaas, who plans to extort ransom money from their parents, and then sell them into slavery. Jason is rescued by Dennis, who is part of the Rakyat. Throughout the adventure, Jason matures into a fearsome warrior and is revered by the Rakyat, begins to enjoy all the killing, and grows more distant from his friends, especially after receiving information that Riley is dead. Jason discovers that Riley is alive, but a prisoner of Hoyt. Hoyt and Jason have a knife fight, with Jason emerging victorious and killing Hoyt. I would argue that this game portrays Mental Illness Fairly even though it’s grouped with most media about media outlets not showing what real Mental Illness does. “Moreover, mental health advocates have asserted that the information provided by the mass media tends to be unfavorable and inaccurate and that mass media depictions of mental illness play a significant role in perpetuating harmful misconceptions” (Wahl).
