Chris Rock

In order to better understand the show, we must look at its creator. Chris Rock based much of the television show and comedy on his own life and experiences. While he did downplay certain elements of the show which will be looked at on another page, much of show are actual events that Chris Rock and his family experienced growing in Brooklyn.

Christopher Julius Rock III was born on February 7, 1966 in Georgetown, South Carolina. Chris was born the oldest of seven other siblings.   His parents Julius and Rose only wanted the best for their children. In the hopes of giving their children a better education and more opportunity Julius and Rose moved the family to Brooklyn, New York, in 1972.

Chris Rock attended James Madison High School, which was predominantly white. Being one of the few black students he lived in consent fear of prejudice, teasing and beatings.  His parents encouraged him to stay in school in order to receive his diploma.  James Madison High School served as much of the inspiration of Everybody Hates Chris. Despite his best efforts, Chris couldn’t handle James Madison and dropped out at the age of 17. A decision his family reluctantly supported. Rock would earn a general equivalency diploma and worked odd jobs and did standup comedy until he got his big break. One happier moments during his time at James Madison was befriending fellow student David Moskowitz. In an interview, Rock states that two were best friends and would be contently be getting in trouble. The only reason they both became friends is because they were both picked on in high school. The character Greg in the television show is based off of Moskowitz. Rock also states that Moskowitz is responsible for introducing him to comedy and the main reason he went into comedy.

Chris Rock featured in several comedy films and shows alike. He appeared in Uptown Comedy Express, Saturday Night Live, Bring the Pain, and directed his own shows such as Head of State, and I Think I Love My Wife before producing Everybody Hates Chris.

Rock used comedy to draw attention to social, political and racial issues within society, in a manner that seemed friendly and relatable. He did this so that people could talk about the issues in a meaningful way without people becoming offended or angered. This being said Rock is an outspoken democrat and wouldn’t shy away from making jokes at the Republican party’s expense even within his shows.
