Acetabularia Life History
van den Hoek (1995)
Acetabularia has a sexual life history that is isogamous with a modified heteromorphic alternation of generation. The zygote (l-b) germinates to make a uninucleate sporophyte. The single cell begins to produce branches at its tip and then the diploid nucleus undergoes meiosis ultimately to produce hundreds of haploid nuclei which migrate to the gametangia at the tip of the cell. The nuclei accrete cytoplasm about themselves and produce cysts within which gametes differentiate and are released.
