Generalized Life History of the Leafy Liverworts

Generalized Life History of the Leafy Liverworts
Scagel et al. (1982)

The sexual life history of of a leafy liverwort is similar to that of Marchantia, but structurally more complex. The spore germinates and develops into a structure that resembles a moss with stem-like and leaf-like structures (A-E). Archegonia and antheridia develop in the axils of the “leaves” (see detail of E). The zygote develops into a sporophyte (F-J), which emerges from the antheridia by the seta. The mature capsule dehisces along longitudinal lines and spores are released (K).
