This system is a modification of Patterson (1999), Adl et al. (2012), Cavalier-Smith et al. (2008), Cavalier-Smith and Chao (2010), Glucksman et al. (2011 and 2013), Paps et al. (2013), and Minge et al. 2009).

CLASS APUSOZOEA

Thicker dorsal organic theca open on the ventral side. Anterior flagellum with retractable basal sheath.

  • ORDER APUSOMONADIDA.
    • Amastigomonas, Apusomonas, Manchomonas, Multimonas, Podomonas, Thecamonas.
  • ORDER MANTAMONADIDA
    • Mantamonas.

CLASS ANCYROMONADEA

Thin organic theca. The anteriorly-directed flagellum is very thin and not easily seen (absent in some). The posteriorly-directed flagellum is thicker and long (up to 2x the length of the cell).

  • ORDER ANCYROMONAIDA = PLANOMONADIDA
    • Ancyromonas.

CLASS BREVEATEA

Cells with single anterior flagellum and few filopodia.

  • Breviata, Subulatomonas.
