This figure is taken from Chaw et al. (2000) and is based on comparisons between nuclear (SSU rRNA), mitochondrial (SSU rRNA), and chloroplast (rbcL) sequences. The analysis indicates that the gnetophytes are embedded within the conifers (and not sisters to the flowering plants). In fact, the flowering plants are sisters to the monophylic clade of extant gymnosperms. Compare this with Pryer et al. (2001) and the Tree of Life Project.
