A Life of Accomplishments

Howard Schnure was a resident of Selinsgrove his whole life. He was born there on October 30, 1850. His mother was the granddaughter of Mayor Anthony Sellin, the town’s founder, and a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. Howard attended Susquehanna University, when it was still the Missionary Institute. He really enjoyed reading and because of that, he ended up having a successful life in the Selinsgrove community. He then married his wife Sara and had two children.

He began working at the First National Bank of Selinsgrove. From there he worked his way up to be bank president bank, a position he held for 24 years. Throughout his life, he accomplished many things. In 1875 he entered a co-partnership with A. Kreeger in the operation of the Isle of the Que Mills in Selinsgrove. This partnership lasted four years, then Mr. Kreeger left, and Howard kept the partnership going with his own son.

Howard had a particular passion for automobiles, he was remembered after his death fpr arriving in town with his nephew in his new touring vehicle. This was at a time when you had to be fairly wealthy to own a car. He spent his late years traveling to many places, including Georgia, Columbia, and Florida. He was a hard-working man, but he spent time with his loved ones, traveled, and did the things he liked the most, fishing and hunting. One of his most memorable memories might have been when he drove his Ford touring car from Selinsgrove to Philadelphia, via Reading and Lebanon, without throwing out the high gear (this was quite an accomplishment). In his time Schnure was like a little hero for Selinsgrove.

Unfortunately, Howard died of bronchial pneumonia. Just when they thought he was getting better, he suddenly died on a Monday, peacefully in his bed. He left behind his wife Sarah and his two children. Although many don’t know about Howard Schnure, he like many others, did his best to improve living in Selinsgrove, by being a loyal and devoted resident and by never leaving his town but improving it and loving it.
