Our map shows all 155 one-room school houses that appear in the 1868 Snyder and Union County atlas, published by Pomeroy & Beers. See parts of the atlas here.
We located the schools by finding all “S.H.” labels in the atlas, comparing the 1868 maps to current Google Maps, and geo-locating the sites. We used Google My Maps to build the map. (Past versions used the Neatline plugin for Omeka, Google Fusion Tables, and the Map Marker plugin for WordPress). Larry Herrold visited each location for photographs in the summer of 2017.
The Snyder County schools are marked with YELLOW PINS and the Union County schools are marked with BLUE PINS. Click/tap the icon in the top right corner of the map to go full screen.
We continue to work on the map. Our next steps are to add site images to each marker and add information on each school found in local newspapers. If you have information about any school shown here, or Snyder/Union school houses not shown, contact Ed Slavishak at slavishak@susqu.edu.
