Being someone who is interested in music and the world of music sharing, I took interest in the genre itself, thus leading to this project. I have found out quite a bit about a few websites that I’m sure most, if not all, of us know and love. It has also helped me to realize the importance of getting music out into the world, and the different platforms in which this is possible. So many artists have been discovered via these means, whether it be with SoundCloud or with YouTube, and musicians continue to find success through these means. Music isn’t just for those who go to record stores anymore—it’s a vast online world now, and it’s only just the beginning.
Though it’s been a bit tough finding reputable sources for my content, I feel that I have succeeded in finding the appropriate amount of informative quotes throughout my research. One of the hardest parts, however, was trying to figure out exactly what is considered a music sharing website. Does streaming qualify? What about sites that are mainly used for other media, such as YouTube?
Other than that small hiccup, I’ve had fun researching and writing the content for the wiki. It’s a genre that I am interested in, and that I am learning a lot about through the research that I am doing for it.
While this project doesn’t seem too related to any of my classes (besides the audio engineering class I took last semester), I can certainly relate the project to my life. I am a singer-songwriter trying to make it in this world, and finding out more about the platforms that I use to do so is extremely helpful. Learning about which ones cater to whom, which have space limits, which are generally disregarded by listeners—it’s all super informational. And I hope that my entry can be informational for others who are interested in the topic.
