2025 was a great year for fantasy releases, with many appearing somewhere on my to-be-read for the year. Lots of my favorite authors released books this year, so I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 fantasy books I encourage you to read before the year is out. There is a mix of books I’ve read with some of my hopefuls, so I hope you enjoy my list!
1. The Princess Knight by Cait Jacobs

Are you a fan of Legally Blonde? This medieval-inspired retelling has the same wit and charm as the beloved movie, but with a fun new twist. Everyone always said that Clía and Domhnall were an ideal match, as the prince and princess of neighboring kingdoms they were a union that surely the gods would even smile upon. Everything seems to be picture perfect until Domhnall ruins everything by refusing to propose. Desperate to win back the prince who broke her heart, Clía follows him to his kingdom’s prestigious military academy. In doing so she meets Ronan, who swears to keep Clía at an arm’s length but can’t help but be intrigued by both her and her pet otter. As they train and spend more time together their feelings beginning to grow, but war is looming in more ways than one.
2. The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig
If you are a fan of gothic fantasy then this is definitely the book for you. Rachel Gillig’s newest book follows Sybil Delling as she and her Diviner sisters near the end of their service at Aisling Cathedral. As a Diviner, Sybil drowns in the cathedral’s spring every day and is responsible for interpreting signs from the great Omens, and can predict terrible things as they occur. When a mysterious new knight shows up at the cathedral and Diviners start mysteriously disappearing one-by-one, Sybil must muster up the courage to ask for his help. With something wrong going on in the world outside the cathedral, only the gods have the answers Sybil is looking for.

3. Among the Burning Flowers by Samantha Shannon

This exciting new novella is set in the same universe as The Priory of the Orange Tree, only a few years before the events of the first book. If you are a newer fan of Samantha Shannon or are intimidated by Priory, then this is a great starting point. Told from the perspectives of three different characters, we bear witness to the fall of the Kingdom of Yscalin. The Draconic army has been dormant for centuries, after almost extinguishing humanity but a new threat is on the rise. In Yscalin, Marosa Vetalda would do anything to escape her cold and controlling father King Sigoso, and unite with her betrothed Aubrecht Lievelyn in Mentadon. Estina Melaugo dreams of a better world she knows isn’t coming while continuing to slay Draconic beasts across the continent. Marosa snd Aubrecht indend to usher in a better world but when the great wyrm Fýredel starts to stir, the world erupts.
4. A Language of Dragons by S. F. Williamson
If you are a fan of political intrigue and flawed characters, this book is definitely for you. This first book in an exciting new duology, set in post-WW1 London where humans and dragons co-exist, follows Vivian Featherswallow as she attempts to obtain an internship studying dragon languages. When her parents get arrested for treason and her sister goes missing, Vivian does everything in her power to get them back, including starting a civil war. At first she believes in the mission she’s set out to do, but she soon realizes that the cushy life she’s lived wasn’t as safe as she thought.

5. The Second Death of Locke by V. L. Bovalino

If you are a fan of knights and magic then this is the perfect book for you. Grey Flynn will do anything for her mage Kier, and has dedicated her life to protect him. On the battlefield she has sworn to be his healer and protector, allowing him to use the deep well of power inside of her. When the two learn of a quest to protect the child of an enemy kingdom, they are pulled deep into the war between the two kingdoms and have to decide how much they are willing to sacrifice to keep their secret hidden. Grey isn’t an ordinary well of power, but the heir of the long lost island of Locke – the root of all power in the world and if Grey dies, all magic dies with her.
6. The Isle in the Silver Sea by Tasha Suri
Like the book above, this book follows a knight and a witch in a Britain that is fueled by stories where the two are destined to fall in love and doom each other in every lifetime. Simran is a witch in the woods and Vina is a knight in the Queen’s court, and when the two women meet and start to fall for each other, they fight to act on their desires, since acting on them would lead to their ruination. While they seek a way to break this vicious cycle, an assassin starts to target stories like theirs and the two must write a story that is stronger than the one fate has decided for them.

7. The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson

Are you a fan of cutthroat competitions and quests to uncover the truth? Then this is the book for you. In this exciting new epic fantasy we travel to the empire of Orrun where Bersun the Brusque must step down after twenty four years. Seven contenders are brought forward to compete for his replacement, all the best of the best, until one of them gets murdered. The one tasked with solving this murder before the end of the trials is none other than Neema Kraa, who is the emperor’s High Scholar. Neema must untangle dark webs of secrets that stretch back generations while simultaneously competing against six others with dark ambitions of their own. If she wins, she takes the throne. If she fails, then death awaits her but the Raven won’t stand for that.
8. Katabasis by R. F. Kuang
If you were a fan of the academic aspects of Babel then you will love R. F. Kuang’s latest book. Two graduate students must set aside their differences and venture into Hell together to save their professor’s soul. Alice Law has put aside everything in life to become one of the greatest and brightest in the field of Magick and study at Cambridge under the most renown magician in the world, Jacob Grimes. When her professor suddenly dies of a magical accident that just might be her fault, she goes after him as his recommendation could alter Alice’s future. It would seem that she wasn’t the only one with this idea as her rival Peter Murdoch, is hot on her heels.

9. Alchemy of Secrets by Stephanie Garber

Stephanie Garber’s debut into the New Adult genre follows Holland St. James as she tries to find the magical artifact known as the Alchemical Heart and stop her death. Holland has always believed that magic was real and when she finds a local legend known as the Watch Man who tells her she’s going to die in twenty four hours, her world gets tipped on its head. With the clock ticking to find this artifact, Holland is pulled deeper into the magic scene in Los Angeles and gravitated towards a mysterious stranger who promises to protect Holland and her sister. As the two race around to find clues and stories about the Heart’s whereabouts, Holland finds out that this dazzling new world and everyone around her are lying to her, and not even the Alchemical Heart can save her.
10. A Treachery Of Swans by A. B. Poranek
I don’t think that my list would be complete without another retelling of some sorts. This retelling of Swan Lake is set in Auréal where magic has been outlawed. Odile has spent years planning a simple heist. Steal the king’s enchanted crown and bring magic back to the world by impersonating the princess. When the king unexpectedly dies she runs into Marie d’Odette, the real princess, and is forced to work side by side with her to try and unravel a tangled web of lies and deceit that leaved Odile uncertain of who to trust. When Odile starts to fall for Marie she must make a difficult choice, the mission she set herself on or the girl she’s slowly started to fall for.

I hope you enjoyed my list! It was hard picking what books I wanted to include in this list as there were so many fantastic fantasy releases this year, with even more fantastic books still yet to release. If you’re an avid reader, what are your 10 books you hope to read before the end of the year?
