OneSU / All Events – Susquehanna UniversityTomorrow is Susquehanna University’s Day of Giving, or as it’s often referred to, OneSU. For those who are unaware, OneSU is an annual event at Susquehanna University where students, staff, faculty, and alumni alike celebrate the traditions that make SU, well, SU! This year’s theme is titled “The Legacy Quest” and is focused on preserving the aspects of Susquehanna that are adored by many and can hopefully be enjoyed by future generations to come. The goal set out for this year is to get up to 1,300 donations to help complete the theme set up by the members of the SU community. For more information, follow this link.

Today, I wanted to take a moment and discuss what this community, and specifically what the Blough-Weis Library means to me as a student. Before I get into anything, I do want to acknowledge the fact that I am a somewhat biased source as someone who not only works at the Library’s Service Desk but have also represented the library for our Student Government Association, and well, writes these blog posts from time to time. But with that said, let’s get into the impact that the library has on me personally.

Shelf-Promotion – News and Book Reviews from Blough-Weis LibraryThe Blough-Weis Library has been my favorite spot on campus since I started as a First Year. While I do admit that the first time, I entered the library was because I heard there was this lovely coffee shop called Scholarly Grounds at the entrance of the building, it seems that I have not left the building since that first encounter. I’ve always loved reading and have had an appreciation for the shrinking population of libraries around the country. I’d been to many libraries in my hometown and even other states, but there is just something so special about university libraries. Whether it be studying for so long that the sun sets or attending ever-so-exciting events like Chill Out, the Book Fair, and SLAC’s BINGO nights, it is so enjoyable sitting in the relaxing atmosphere with friends and faculty.

Not only does the library provide a comfortable space to do these things, but it is also a fantastic resource for me as a student. Obviously, like other libraries, there is an extensive collection of books, journals, novels, CDs, DVDs, and more, but the library also has many of the textbooks and other materials that I use on a near-daily basis for my classes. Not only are the library’s textbook reserves saving my wallet from hundreds each semester, but they also provide great convenience for times that I have forgotten or simply lost my ever-so-pricey books.

Additionally, the library also provides other fantastic services that help me through my college experience. Interlibrary-Loan is a fantastic resource directed by Nici Allen. Nici always helps me get books that we unfortunately don’t have on the shelves in a simple and quick manner. Meg Garnett, our Archivist, is another great person to talk to when you are looking for the most niche book or article. Besides all the logistics that each of the eight librarians does to keep the building running, they are also always there to help students with essays and projects, which is even more convenient during midterm and finals season.

Honestly, I can’t express how much I adore our library, and don’t think I would be the successful student I am if it weren’t for the resources and friends that I have made under its limitless roof. OneSU is a great time to show our appreciation for the things that we love about our university and the faculty and staff that make it such a wonderful place to spend my college experience. Happy Day of Giving!
