Last week was Banned Books Week, and to honor it, SLAC held Banned Books Trivia on October 7th. Now, you may be asking yourself what exactly is SLAC and what happened at their trivia night? Well, you are in luck, because here I am going to be sharing everything about SLAC, a recap of Banned Books Trivia, and tell you ways that you can get involved with SLAC!

What is SLAC?

SLAC LogoSLAC stands for the Student Library Advisory Committee. It is just one of the many clubs we have here at Susquehanna University, but it is one of my personal favorites. SLAC is used to bridge the gap between the students on campus and the staff at the library in order to create a more accessible and diverse experience at the Blough-Weis Library.

With the support of the Library’s Assistant Director, Ryan Ake, in 2015, it officially became a Student Government Association (SGA) recognized club, allowing them to expand their reach and increase their presence on campus. Today, SLAC stands as a stable club on campus, and works to improve student-library relationships.

This year, SLAC is managed by President Matelyn Lugar ‘27, Vice-President Lorelei Jacobson ‘27, Treasurer Shelby Faller ‘29, Social Media Manager Natalie Dreyer ‘28, and SGA Liaison Eowyn Thompson ‘29. Their faculty advisor is Amanda Boyer, one of the library’s incredible librarians.

SLAC meets at 4:15 PM in Library Room 123 every Monday. These meetings always start with a fun question of the week and are used to assist the library and to plan events. Each semester, SLAC holds a number of events that are used to encourage reading and library interaction. One of their most popular events is Book Bingo, where students can win books during their bingo games. For Banned Books Week, SLAC held a fun trivia night!

Banned Books Trivia Banned Book Trivia

Banned Books Trivia was held from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Tuesday, October 7th in Charlie’s Lounge. Trivia was a free event, and SLAC sold popcorn for $1 and Shirly Temples for $2.

Trivia was done using Kahoot, and we played four different rounds, all with their own category that surrounded Banned Books. The first round was all about the history of banned books. We had questions all about when Banned Books Week was first created, why it is needed, and other history questions about specific banned books. The second round asked questions about why books were banned, and the third had the players name which book is/isn’t banned. The last round was about general banned book trivia, allowing people to one final chance to show off their banned book expertise.

Students showing their banned book prizes.Trivia was a huge success! People loved the opportunity to put their banned book knowledge to the test. I saw as people cheered in victory over a correct answer and asked questions about questions they got wrong. As she hosted the trivia, Matelyn paused between questions to provide elaboration about the content of the questions, allowing everyone the opportunity to learn more about banned books. The top three winners of each round then received fun prizes. 2nd and 3rd place winners received a goody bag filled with candy and banned book buttons and bookmarks. The 1st place winners were able to pick out a banned book and also received some candy and banned book themed goodies!

SLAC’s Next Event

Now that you know all about SLAC and the great events that they host, make sure to put this next one on your calendar.

On October 20th, SLAC is hosting a Craft Night with Jenny Roberts-Reilley. Join SLAC and Jenny at 4:15 PM in Library Room 123 to learn how to make needlepoint bookmarks. Whether you are an expert at needlepoint or have never touched a sewing needle in your life, this event is for you. Jenny will go through step by step on how to make the cutest needlepoint bookmark, and I can guarantee you will have an amazing time.

If you think you would be interested in joining SLAC, make sure to join us at Craft Night, and come to our next regular meeting on October 27th. Don’t forget to follow SLAC’s Instagram to stay informed about our next Book Bingo, Trivia Night, or any other fun events throughout the semester!
