Sometimes getting a research project started can be the hardest part. Brainstorming the elements that go into a quality research question can be overwhelming. Fortunately, the library has several resources that can help you get started, and this is one of the best:

CQ Researcher is a library database that provides in-depth background research on a variety of current, newsworthy topics.

It is made up of single-themed reports, well researched by journalists and professionally fact-checked, that provide a broad overview of a variety of topics going all the way back to 1923. For example, recent reports include:

Energy Warfare: Has the Ukraine conflict permanently altered global oil and gas markets

The Future of Cryptocurrency: Can the industry overcome recent turmoil?

Deaths of Despair: Why are so many Americans without college degrees dying prematurely?

You can browse topics, or you can search directly from the top of the page. Within these full reports are several subsections that make the reports easy to follow, like an Introduction, Background, Current Situation, Outlook, Pro/Con section and much more. As with any reliable resource, all information within these reports are responsibly cited with links to the source.

Reports are published 44 times a year and are all available directly through the library’s website.

If you’re looking for a topic for a research paper, essay, or discussion topic, CQ is an excellent place to start! As always, if you need help, don’t hesitate to contact a librarian!
