The Blough-Weis Library welcomes Amanda Boyer as our new First-Year Experience Librarian!

Amanda is a 2016 Susquehanna University graduate. She double majored in Creative Writing and English Literature. During her junior year, she found an interest in library science. She went to Kent State for her Masters in Library Science with a focus in digital librarianship and digital preservation.

“That’s why you become a librarian. Because you want to help people connect to the information they need.”

When asked why she chose to come back to SU, Amanda said she grew an affinity for SU during her time here and always knew she wanted to come back. She never wanted to leave to begin with.

Subjects she covers…

  • Education
  • First-Year Experience

Amanda works directly with first-year students, helping them make the transition from high school to college. She teaches Perspectives, and Writing and Thinking, classes about the resources available to them at the library. She is in charge of the library Open House, and is the liaison for the Education department.

This semester, Amanda has a goal of rebuilding connections with faculty and staff from when she was a student. She also wants to find opportunities for collaboration, especially outside academic departments, to build campus outreach with Student Life and First-Year Experience.

“The more opportunity for collaboration, the more we can get our name out there, the more students will want to use the library and that’s our primary goal.”

Amanda says the library is the most underutilized resource on any college campus. She says, “people are stuck in the presumption that a library is just books.” She wants students to learn and experience all that librarians can do to help them, and understand that it’s much more than pointing them towards books on a shelf.

If Amanda could give advice to her college self now…

“It’s okay to change your mind, and changing your mind does not mean you’re a failure.”

Drop by and say Hi to Amanda at the Blough-Weis Library!
