The Blough-Weis Library sponsors a slew of events that have virtually nothing to do with books or knowledge or even academia. Sometimes, the library and its staff just want Susquehanna students to have fun, and one example of this is Dog Days. Each Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., the library partners with the Counseling Center to bring therapy dogs to campus. If you find yourself missing your furry friend from home, stop by Deg fountain to get some much-needed puppy time. However, what many people don’t know is that Dog Days is a longstanding tradition at Susquehanna.

According to archived issues of The Crusader, the former student newspaper, Dog Days was started in 2004 by the former director of the Counseling Center, Kathy Bradley. This program began as a way for new students to feel more comfortable at the university. Additionally, it was meant to give students who missed their dogs an opportunity to interact with animals. The program began with professors, faculty, and staff bringing their own dogs to campus to meet the student body. Eventually the program grew, and the Counseling Center began supplying attendees with free pizza from Papa John’s. Eventually, the event got so big, that local newspapers like the Philadelphia Inquirer and The Daily Item began covering the program.

This portion was run in the September 10, 2010 edition of The Crusader.

Dog Days continues to show up consistently in the archives all the way up until 2015.

So, if you’re looking to participate in a longstanding SU tradition with man’s best friend, stop by Dog Days on Tuesdays.
