DICTIONARY OF TERMS FOR THE DIVERSITY OF LIFE

This is an alphabetical list of terms used in the Diversity of Life. Each term has a pronunciation guide, an explanation of its etymology, and a brief definition. Some terms have different technical meanings from one discipline to another. For example, the term velum is derived from the Latin word for veil and it refers to the veil under the bell of certain jellyfish, the veil at the anterior end of a lamprey mouth, and the veil of tissue that connects the stipe with the cap of a mushroom.
