CHOANOCYTES

Pronunciation: ko-A-no-sites

Etymology: The term is derived from two Greek roots that mean funnel (choni, χωνί) and hollow vessel (kytos, κύτος). It is a reference to the funnel-like appearance of the top of the cell.

Choanocytes are collar cells that have the flagellated structure of choanoflagellates. See the choanocytes lining the radial canals in the illustration of a sponge below.
