United States Holocaust Memorial and Museum: Washington D.C.

Day’s or Remember

About  Museum and Website

The museum was dedicated in 1993 to memorialize the victims of the Holocaust.  It also aims to bring awareness to prejudice and genocide and encourage people to confront these issues. The website, which is available in 15 different languages, was visited last year by more than 9 million people from 236 different countries and territories, making the site the world’s leading online resource on the Holocaust.

Museum’s and Website’s Goals and Objectives

The United States Holocaust Memorial and Museum’s website states that the Holocaust was “the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.” The main goal of the website is for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to introduce people to what the Holocaust is and advance people’s knowledge on this horrific event.  In addition to giving a brief history of the Holocaust as well as remembering the victims and survivors, the website also has multiple sections urging visitors to confront genocide, racism, and antisemitism.  It furthermore instructs visitors on how to be active participants when it comes to spreading awareness of genocide and preventing it.

Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre

Past example of the harmony between the website and education.

About Museum, Memorial Centre and Website

The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre was founded in 1976 and the Montreal Holocaust Museum opened to the public in 1979.  The website is only available in English and French, which poses a problem when it comes to attracting people from various backgrounds across the globe, especially since the site claims its goal is to educate people of all backgrounds about the Holocaust.

Museum’s and Website’s Goals and Objectives

The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre’s website states that its mission is to “educate people of all ages and backgrounds about the Holocaust while sensitizing the public to the universal perils of antisemitism, racism, hate, and indifference.” The museum as well as the website tell the stories of Jewish communities before the war, during the war, and after the war. One of the main focuses of the museum and website is to reflect on the issues of prejudice, racism, and antisemitism that caused the destruction of communities during the war. The website also aims to educate people on what Jewish culture was like before the war and the Holocaust by describing Jewish communities’ customs, traditions, and daily lives. Visitors to the website are also educated on the rise of Nazism and the spread of antisemitism throughout Europe.

Holocaust Museum and Learning Center St. Louis Missouri

About Museum, Learning Center and Website

The Holocaust Museum and Learning Center opened in 1995 and was made possible through the generosity of community leaders and Holocaust survivors.  The website was created by a department of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis.

Museum’s and Website’s Goals and Objectives

The mission statement of the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center of St. Louis, Missouri mission states that “[t]hrough its collections, exhibits and programs, the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center strives to educate all people about the history and consequences of the Holocaust in the hope of preventing such events from happening again.” The goal of the museum and website was not just to simply tell the history of the Holocaust and commemorate the loss of life, but rather to function as a learning center that teaches lessons about the dangers of indifference that are still present today. The learning center’s aim is to also explore the roots of intolerance towards religion, ethnicity, and race and find ways to establish awareness and prevent intolerance from occurring. The website also gives a brief timeline of events about Nazi Germany, World War II, and the Holocaust to give visitors historical background.

Some Issues with the Website

The website is only available in English, which limits the number of people who have access to the website.  Furthermore, the website provides only limited information about the Holocaust:  there is just a simple timeline of events and a brief list of important terms related to the Holocaust or events that occurred during the Holocaust.
