9) My Remix Project

For my remix, I created an interactive hypertext version of Molly McCully Brown’s collection of poems, The Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and Feebleminded, choosing bits of writing from the collection and mapping them onto a map of the Virginia State Colony. I chose this text because it is hauntingly beautiful, and as I read it for my Living Writers class, I found myself reminded of how any country and any people can fall to evil, including the United States. It reminded me of how easy it is to blame others while ignoring your own faults. However, understood that while I loved the collection, I would not have picked it up or purchased it on my own. As such, I found myself wishing to open the text up to younger readers, so others might have this same awareness, even if in a limited way. Many of my composition choices were made with this young audience in mind, such as the depth of visuals, a Spotify playlist, and jumping buttons. The platform Genially, on which I constructed my remix text, can be embedded in websites and social media applications. To circulate my remix text, I would create a website as the text’s base point where it can always be accessed and then share it through social media.
